League of Super Evil

Besides the release of my first novel, STAR Academy, this past week, another great pleasure has been to start working on my first script for League of Super Evil. It’s a smart, brilliantly funny animated series about a gang of would-be Super Villains. But the League of Super Evil’s acronym, L.O.S.E., provides a big hint of what lies in store for them and even their best-laid nefarious plans. What makes this show so fun to write for (besides the fact that the creators are a great bunch of guys) is that the premise is really clear, and key characters are all very distinct from each other. If you cover up the character names while reading a League of Super Evil script, you can still tell who’s talking, because the motivations and speech styles are so distinctive. To me, that’s the litmus test for good characterization. The character designs are equally distinct, and the director has great comedy instincts too, so the timing on the visual gags really kills. Like Jimmy Two Shoes, League of Super Evil also has a rich colour palette, which is something that you don’t see often enough in animated series. All in all, if like me and most other living people, you were born too late to write for shows like the original Tom and Jerry, with its joyously wicked whack-’em-and-stack’em approach to larfs, this is a rare pleasure.
