Superior Thinking and Advanced Research Academy – The Sequel

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Yes, I know the first book isn’t out yet, but I have been busily working on the sequel to Star Academy, which Random House/Doubleday has commissioned. How the hell did J.K Rowling manage to write so much of her series in advance of the first Harry Potter book, without going bankrupt in the process? It remains a mystery to me. No matter, I am utterly thrilled about my publisher having commissioned a sequel, except that it’s due in October, and meanwhile, primordial voices are calling (fortunately not collect, or from inside my head). I believe it to be the voice of the Canadian summer, the spirit of that three-week period in August when you can go for a swim in an unheated pool without risking heart attack or icebergs, or have a pint or two on a patio with friends without succumbing to hypothermia. If only I had spent my childhood summer vacations with the earwigs down in my parents’ basement watching Star Trek re-runs instead of playing outdoors, I’d be better equipped for this hunkering-down-in-the-air-conditioned-dark-writing-sequels business. Perhaps a mid-life conversion to deep-fried starches, processed cheese products and Wrath of Khan dvd-a-thons would be just the thing to quell those urges to head outdoors into the light…
