**** Illustrator Wanted for Graphic Novel Project!

I’m continuing my search for an illustrator or cartoonist to adapt my adult comedy series, The Roaches, to graphic novel format. For those who don’t know me, I’m a comedy and animation writer, a co-creator of the Gemini-winning Olliver’s Adventures, which aired on Teletoon for many years, and was also involved in co-creating and developing Jimmy Two Shoes with Sean Scott. I’ve also written numerous episodes of Atomic Betty and a whack of other things that you can see on imdb.com Sean did some killer character designs for a television series I’m hoping to get into development, an adult animated comedy entitled The Roaches. In keeping with my background in writing for programs such as This Hour Has 22 Minutes, it’s a political and social satire, but very much a no-holds barred one. Having said that, there’s nothing gratuitous about it. I try to keep it nasty and incisive but smart. Samantha Haywood, an agent who reps Drawn & Quarterly, happened to see my scripts and character descriptions, as well as Sean’s visual interpretations of my characters, and contacted me with the very welcome news that she thinks that The Roaches could be the Next Big Graphic Novel. The hitch: Sean is gearing up for season 2 of Jimmy Two Shoes, and has no comic experience and isn’t all that comfortable with the format (immensely talented though he is, in my opinion), so I am left looking for a very talented, very twisted but in the right way illustrator/cartoonist to work with the existing designs (subject to a little re-interpretation, of course, for the comic format and creative mojo). Samantha is a highly respected literary agent with access to all the biggest publishers in the world (click here to find out more about her and clients) and feels that what is needed is a 20-page sample of the graphic novel, interpreting a few scenes from the pilot script that I wrote, so she has something to take to publishers to persuade them to commission and advance us – that is the illustrator and myself – a nice wad of cash to get us started on a 200-page graphic novel.
Since I write but don’t draw, I am very, very interested in hearing from someone with a solid background in either comics or graphic novels and perhaps animation (if you have a graphic novel sensibility) to come on board.

This is a very serious and potentially quite lucrative deal for the right person. My first novel, a sci-fi comedy entitled STAR Academy, for anyone who has missed my rantings elsewhere on the site, will be in major release by Random House/Doubleday come Sept. 15, 2009 and they’ve already commissioned the sequel, which will be released in 2010. So I think the timing for a graphic novel for The Roaches is excellent, coming as it does in the midst of two major novel releases from yours truly. P.S. In answer to several questions I’ve had about it, the targets of the satire will be on the left, the right and in the centre. Not just macro-politics, but all those little micro-political human foibles too – wanting to save the planet while keeping our cheap burgers, outsourcing so we can buy all those impossibly inexpensive widgets from China, then wondering why the hell we’re suddenly out of a job. Anything worthy of satire can and will be thrown into the comedic arena for a cage match.

    Hi JTSCF! Thanks for your note. I’m thrilled to hear that you’re so into Jimmy Two Shoes. The second season is in production as we speak. In fact, almost all the scripts are finished. Sean Scott has started boarding the first episodes of the season, so everything’s in high gear. I honestly think it’s going to be even better than the first season.     Hi Deon, Thanks for asking. I’ve had to put the graphic novel project on hold while I finish the sequel to STAR Academy, write Jimmy Two Shoes and do some other projects.     No, it is not ready yet, so far as I am aware. The latest word (today in fact) is that Sean won’t be finished directing the final episodes of season 2 until December of 2010. That strongly suggests an autumn release. It’s normal to have the tail end of the season still in production while the first few episodes are on the air, but it would be suicidal to start airing the first completed shows if there were still a lot unfinished, which would be the case if it began airing in the spring.

Most of the season 2 scripts are finished now, and many are in the boarding and animating stages, so it shouldn’t be long now.     That’s up to the networks, so I don’t know the answer. I think it’s unlikely though, other than perhaps a few “sneak previews”, because so many people are on vacation in the summer that audiences are small. That’s why there’s often a lot of “repeats” in the summer.

    That’s true especially since the World Cup is coming in the summer. As much as I love to see the second season I’d rather wait till fall with a better chance of a larger audience than in summer. Jimmy Two-Shoes is awesome, one of the funniest new shows I’ve seen in a long time. Great job Edward and Sean Scott as well.

    Hi, I’m thrilled that you like Heloise! For me, she is the most personal character on the show, because she is actually inspired by several women I have dated over the years. Which is to say that if you have observed that Heloise seems to have some mood swing issues… you’re right! Heloise is highly intelligent but has difficulty keeping certain “impulses” in check.

    I’m working on a new television series and finishing the second draft of STAR Academy, so I won’t be able to write on my blog much or answer any letters for the next couple of months, but I will try to check in from time to time.

    hey Edward i enjoy the show Jimmy Two Shoes i just like the humor and the characters their funny, i got to say heloise is my favourite because how she an emotional character cuz she a love interest and a misunderstood character.Season 2 has been really cool i like how jimmy is tougher like in high school mulesical. And how beezy becomes mean and more sneaky, and how Heliose is romantic and sweet. I gotta i like Heloise Seceret Admirer to see that jimmy does like her and seeing him getting jelious really funny, it nice to see he cares.
